At Oglethorpe, Bel/wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u00e9n was a Civic Engagement Scholar and majored in Biopsychology, with a minor in Sociology./wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u00a0Since graduating, she has worked with various missionaries, and is now a community healthcare educator with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta./wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u00a0Bel/wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u00e9n has been accepted to Georgetown University’s Global Health Program, where she plans to obtain her master’s degree and then pursue her dream of attending medical school./wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/n Through her work, Bel/wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u00e9n has visited rural communities in Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica to help improve basic first aid, nutrition and mental health. B/wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u00e9len evaluates and identifies health needs and develops simple strategies to improve health in those communities. She’s found that implementing healthy habits is not just about teaching people what to eat and how to eat it, but also about helping to ensure they have access to those types of foods./wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/n /wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u201cWhen I was in Mexico, we wanted to implement healthier meals for a community, but they didn/wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u2019t have access to the proper foods and vegetables,” she explained. “We were able to obtain government subsidies for that community. Now, once a week, a market that sells fruits and vegetables goes to the town and the people are eating healthier because of it. That particular community was lucky, because not all/wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u00a0that communities get government subsidies, and that can be challenging./wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u201d/wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/n Oglethorpe/wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u00a0also/wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u00a0has helped her to network within her field, and make the connections necessary to move ahead, she says. /wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u201cNick Spates nominated me for the Atlanta Business Chronicle/wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u2019s 30 under 30, and I had no idea./wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u201d Bel/wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u00e9n was paired with mentor Nick Spates through Oglethorpe/wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u2019s Rotaract Club, of which Bel/wp-json/wp/v2/news/63825/u00e9n served as President last year.
